Choosing the right skateboard decks can make or break your skating experience. One of the first things every beginner asks is: “What size skateboard deck should I get?” The answer depends on a combination of your height, shoe size, and the type of skating you want to do. After diving into the best-ranking guides online, this article breaks the entire process into a clean, simple, and accurate size guide to help you pick your perfect deck.
What Is a Skateboard Deck and Why Does Size Matter?
A skateboard deck is the flat wooden board you stand on. While it might seem like just a piece of maple wood, its width, length, concave, and shape directly affect balance, control, comfort, and performance.
Why Deck Size Matters
- Stability: Wider decks give more stability for beginners and taller riders.
- Flip Tricks: Narrow decks make it easier to flip and maneuver the board.
- Comfort: Decks that match your shoe size feel more natural, which reduces foot fatigue.
This is why choosing the right size isn’t optional — it’s essential.
What Size Skateboard Deck Should I Get Based on My Height?
Height is one of the most popular ways to determine ideal deck width. Most top skating sites use this universal chart:
|
Rider Height |
Recommended Deck Width |
|
Under 4’6″ |
7.0″ – 7.25″ |
|
4’6″ – 5’1″ |
7.25″ – 7.5″ |
|
5’1″ – 5’6″ |
7.5″ – 7.75″ |
|
5’6″ – 5’10” |
7.75″ – 8.0″ |
|
5’10” – 6’1″ |
8.0″ – 8.25″ |
|
Over 6’1″ |
8.25″ and above |
Key tip: Taller riders benefit from wider decks due to their naturally higher center of gravity, which needs more stability.
What Deck Size Should I Choose Based on Shoe Size?
Most pro shops agree—your shoe size is equally important as your height.

US Men’s Shoe Size |
Recommended Deck Width |

7.0″ – 7.5″ |
|
6–8 |
7.5″ – 7.75″ |
|
8–10 |

|
10–12 |
8.0″ – 8.25″ |
|
12+ |
8.25″ – 8.5″+ |
Why Shoe Size Matters
Your feet should comfortably rest on the deck with enough room for stability but not so much space that flips become harder.
How Skate Style Influences the Best Skateboard Deck Size
Different skateboarding styles require specific deck widths for the best performance. Here’s what top sites recommend:
1. Street Skating (Technical Tricks)
- Ideal size: 7.75″ – 8.0″
- Narrower decks help with faster flips, rotations, and ledge tricks.
2. Skatepark & Transition (Bowls, Mini Ramps)
- Ideal size: 8.0″ – 8.25″
- Slightly wider decks give better stability for carving and speed.
3. Vert Skating
- Ideal size: 8.25″ – 8.5″+
- Wide decks help with high airs, stability, and landing power.
4. Cruising & Transportation
- Ideal size: 8.25″ – 8.5″+ (or cruiser decks)
- Wider boards are more comfortable for long rides and rougher ground.
How Deck Shape & Concave Affect Fit and Performance
Although width is the priority, the shape also matters.
Concave (the curve of the deck)
- Low concave: Stable, great for cruising.
- Medium concave: All-around option for beginners.
- High concave: More board feel and control for technical tricks.
Deck Shape
- Popsicle shape: The standard shape for street and park skating.
- Shaped decks: Wider noses/tails enhanced for pool skating and style-focused riding.
How to Measure Your Current Skateboard Deck (If You Already Have One)
If you’re upgrading, measure your deck’s width using a simple ruler or tape measure from side to side. If your current setup feels comfortable, stick close to that width. If you feel unstable, go wider. If flip tricks feel heavy, go narrower.
Beginner Recommendations (Most Common Sizes)
From aggregated pro shop recommendations:
- Most teen or adult beginners: 7.75″–8.0″
- Bigger riders who want control: 8.0″–8.25″
- Riders who want a stable, comfortable all-purpose deck: 8.25″
